Alarm System Terms
Auxiliary alarm systemA system that transmits a fire alarm from a detection device to a municipal fire alarm box, which transmits the alarm to the public fire service communication center.
Burglar alarmAn audible or silent alarm, activated by unauthorized entry. Often, properties protected by burglar alarms can receive a discount on their property and crime insurance premiums.
Central stationA fire resistive secure facility operated 24 hours a day by a professional alarm company, usually approved by Underwriters Laboratories. Client alarms, connected to the central station by electrical or electronic circuits, are continually monitored. When an alarm is received, the local fire or police department is notified and a security guard is often dispatched.
Central station alarm systemAn alarm system that is controlled and operated by a central station, which upon receipt of a signal will take the necessary action. Actions may include notifying the fire or police department, calling the subscriber, or sending its own investigator to the scene of the alarm.
Contact switchA device used to trigger a burglar alarm. When a door or window is opened, a magnetic field is removed, which activates the switch, turning on the alarm.
Infrared detectorA device used to trigger a burglar alarm; a detector that senses the body heat of an intruder who enters the protected area. A change in the protected area's normal heat profile sets off the burglar alarm.
Lacing detection systemA detection system used to trigger a burglar alarm. A closely woven pattern of metallic foil or fine brittle wire is placed on the surface of the protected area and covered by a panel. When the foil or wire is broken by an intruder, the detection circuit is interrupted, setting off the burglar alarm.
Local alarm systemEither a burglar or a fire alarm system that sets off an audible sound at the location where it is installed.
Microwave detectorA device used to trigger a burglar alarm; a motion detector that projects high-frequency radio waves, or microwaves, into the area to be protected. When the waves are interrupted by an intruder, the system's circuit is disrupted, setting off the alarm.
Object protectionA form of burglar alarm detection where a specific important object such as a safe, filing cabinet, or expensive equipment is protected, as distinct from protecting an entire building or area.
Photoelectric detectorA device used to trigger a burglar alarm. A beam of light (usually infrared) is projected across the area to be protected. If the beam is interrupted by an intruder, the disrupted photoelectric circuit sets off the burglar alarm.
Proprietary alarm systemAn alarm system owned, operated, and maintained by the owner of the protected property. The alarm is received at a proprietary supervising station at the protected property, attended by security personnel.
Proximity detectorA device used to trigger a burglar alarm. It uses an object (e.g., a safe, filing cabinet) as an antenna, electronically linked to an alarm control. When an intruder approaches or touches the object, its electrostatic field is disturbed, activating the alarm.
Remote station alarm systemAn alarm system that transmits the alarm from the protected premises to a remote location, such as a fire or police station.
Ultrasonic detectorA burglar alarm trigger that emits an ultrasonic wave pattern into the area to be protected. When the wave pattern is disrupted by an intruder, the burglar alarm operates.
Vibration detectorA burglar alarm trigger device that uses a highly sensitive piezoelectric crystal or microphone to detect the sound pattern that an object, such as a hammer or drill, would generate on the protected surface (a safe or vault). When a vibration is detected, the burglar alarm is set off.
Window tapeA device used to trigger a burglar alarm. A thin metallic foil is affixed to the glass surface of a door or window. Breaking the glass ruptures the foil, which interrupts the burglar alarm detection circuit and sets off the alarm.
